The preparation is completed. John's ministry is sadly ended. Jesus begins with something of greater importance than miracles as we will see in the next study. He starts with good news from God.
Jesus’ preaching
Verse 15 is one of the great verses of the bible. John could only preach repentance whereas Jesus tells us to repent and believe (trust in Jesus as our Saviour) because soon it will be too late.
God's kingdom came when Jesus came into the world. It is still coming as others come to trust Him. But soon it will have come completely on the last day. Those who enter this kingdom have a saviour and a friend whom God is well pleased with; a saviour who can understand our difficulties and problems and give us a reason for living. The question is, are we willing to repent of our sins and believe.
Verses 16-20 reveal the type of people Jesus calls. They are neither rich people, kings or prime ministers but ordinary people who are prepared to leave all and follow Him. He then gives them a purpose in life - to tell others the good news (verse 17).
Jesus’ authority
The authority of Jesus is now becoming clearer.
- He has authority in His teaching. He did not just preach men's thoughts but spoke as if God was speaking and people felt they had to listen.
- He has authority over Satan (the unclean spirit) who destroys peoples lives. Satan realised that Jesus was more powerful than him and that he had to obey him.
- He has authority over sickness. As soon as He is told about Simon's mother-in-law's sickness He heals her immediately. She does not need more time to recover but is back to full strength straight away.
His authority cannot be compared with anyone. Everybody's sickness was dealt with and nobody's problem was too difficult for Him. Jesus shows that He has authority over all that seems difficult for us in life.
When the problems of life overwhelm us Jesus is the only one who has the power to help. Surely there has never been a man like this man! .
Time to think
- What did Jesus preach about?
- What impact does the fact that Jesus has all authority have on your life?
