Study 22

The exact cost of being a Christian

Read Mark 8v34-9v1

In verse 34 Jesus makes sure everyone hears Him. This message is not for any special type of Christian but is the standard for all who want to follow Him. He is absolutely honest and does not try to hide the fact that being a Christian can be hard - yes, very hard at times.

Deny yourself

First we must deny ourselves - which means saying no to constantly trying to please ourselves and satisfy our selfish desires. Only God can help us do this: "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and 'godly lives in the present age." (Titus 2: 11-12). Are you prepared for this?

Take up your cross

Secondly we must take up our cross. This does not mean that we need to die for our sins. Jesus has already done that. But it does mean putting to death our sinful passions and desires and being willing to suffer for Him: "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires." (Galatians 5:24).

Follow Jesus

Thirdly we must follow Jesus and do what He commands.

Verses 36 and 37 explain why this is so important. (Our soul is our personality, the 'real me', which lives for ever).

Jesus says that any attempt to live for ourselves is pointless as one day we will die. But those who follow Him, who even die for the gospel, will have eternal life.

What is the point of gaining everything in the whole world, including money and power but losing your soul for eternity? (That is, experiencing loss, separation and punishment for ever).

All the money in the world cannot save our soul. But Jesus can if we trust Him.

The conclusion is clear. If we are to be Christians we are to trust and follow Jesus - and that includes not being ashamed of Him and what He teaches. Otherwise on that great day when all will see Him as the King and ruler of this world, when He judges everybody, He will be ashamed of us. And that will be tragic.

To encourage the disciples Jesus tells them that they will be given power to witness and tell others of their Lord. This occurs in Acts Chapter 2.

Time to think

  1. What will it mean for you to follow Jesus?
  2. What is most valuable: your money or your soul
