Study 26

Marriage and children

Read Mark 10v1-16

The bible deals with every aspect of life.

Marriage

Here we see the Pharisees trying to find out if Jesus believed in the bible even if it cost Him His popularity. There must have been people in the crowd who were divorced or knew good people who had been divorced how would He deal with their question?

The bible teaches, through Moses, that divorce is only allowed if the marriage is built on a lie involving immorality or adultery - ultimately because of sin.

The point is that marriage was established by God as the proper way to bring together a man and woman who love each other. The relationship is meant to be totally secure and full of trust and love. In verse 7 Jesus explains that sex was created solely for this relationship. Obviously whenever sex occurs outside of marriage, however pleasurable in the short term, it usually ends in sadness, mistrust, guilt and a feeling of being used.

If marriages are broken wrongfully the guilty partner does not ultimately have to answer to the other partner or the law of the land, but to God for he has broken God's law.

Children

How appropriately the bible moves on to talk about children. The disciples ask the people not to bring children to Jesus as He has greater things to do with His time but Jesus tells them off. He loves children and cares deeply for them.

We should come to God with childlike honesty, simplicity and above all trust then we too will enter God's kingdom, whatever our sin has been.

Time to think

  1. How important does God view the marriage relationship?
  2. How should we come to Jesus?
