Study 28

A selfish request. A selfless saviour.

Read Mark 10v32-45

Jesus shows great courage as He moves towards His final destiny at Jerusalem.

There is no accident in the death of the Lord Jesus. Again He describes to His disciples exactly what is about to occur including his resurrection from the dead.

Power or suffering

Two of the disciples after hearing such great truths start to think about themselves and their own positions of power, asking to sit one on Jesus' right hand and one on His left in heaven.

It is interesting that when He died on the cross, on His right and left hand side were two thieves and murderers for "He was numbered with the transgressors "(Isaiah 53:12).

If anyone desires to push for power they are doing the opposite of Christ. A Christian should not be selfish or ruthlessly ambitious in any way but should in humility "consider others better" than himself (Philippians 2:3).

Jesus himself :

"being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness, And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:6-8)

Time to think

  1. How can you consider others better than yourself?
  2. In what ways are you selfish?
