Here comes the King

Read Mark 11v1-10

Jesus spent most of his time avoiding the crowds but now we see a dramatic change in events.

The humble King

The time had come. He enters Jerusalem at the most crowded time of year so that all attention will be focused on Him and the great event about to take place in His death on the cross.

Because He is the Lord, He has a right to take the animal," for every animal of the forest is mine...the world is mine and all that is in it" (Psalm 50:10-12). When Jesus takes something He is only claiming what is rightfully His. He is the owner. But why would He, the Lord of heaven and earth choose to enter Jerusalem on a donkey?

Firstly because God had promised 500 years before in the Old Testament that this is how Jesus would come: "Rejoice greatly; 0 Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (Zechariah 9:9).

Secondly because it showed the humility of Jesus. He entered Jerusalem
on a borrowed animal: "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you
through His poverty might become rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9).

The people praise God for his entrance. All eyes were fixed on Him. And so begin the most important events in the history of human existence.

Time to think

  1. How come everything belongs to Jesus?
  2. Why did Jesus ride into Jerusalem?
