Study 35
The end times
Read Mark 13v1-13
Chapter 13 of Mark's gospel is full of prophecy (a proclamation of God's plan). Within this chapter there are two great events. One is the destruction of Jerusalem and the total devastation of the temple there, which took place in A.D. 70. The other is the second coming of Jesus Christ.
We do not know the date of this coming. It could take place any day. What we do know is that it is as certain to occur as the first event when Jerusalem was destroyed and its temple utterly raised to the ground. It is at this second coming that the world as we know it will end and Jesus will be seen by everyone to be Lord.
Living in the light of Jesus’ 2nd coming
Jesus teaches the disciples about practical Christian living. The disciples want to know when this coming will be and what the signs will be.
Jesus tells them in verses 5 and 6 to live stable Christian lives and not to be led astray or to depart from the faith by being taken up with the latest fad or new thing. He goes on to remind them that even major disruptive events in the world or persecution can be turned into opportunities for Christian witness, proving the life changing power of the gospel.
The disciples are told to keep going with tenacious, unflinching faith, for although the true gospel will always be opposed, it nevertheless will always challenge and triumph for it saves to the uttermost those who come to God by Jesus Christ.
The priority of these verses is readiness to meet this returning Lord Jesus, who came the first time as a baby in Bethlehem, but who will come again as the Judge of the living and the dead. Are you ready to meet Him? The only way to be really ready is to turn from sin and entrust your life to Him.
Time to think
- Can we know when Jesus is coming again?
- Are you ready for Jesus’ 2nd coming
