The end times (Part III)
In verses 24-27 Jesus goes beyond the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple to what will happen before his second coming at the end of time.
The second coming of Jesus
The second coming of Jesus will be:
- Startling with cosmic disruption (verses 24 and 25)
- Personal (verse 26)
- Visible
- Glorious
Again, the challenge is to be ready for this great event.
Then in verses 28-31 Jesus emphasises the nearness of Jerusalem's destruction. He does this by the simple parable of the fig tree to underline His solemn prophecy of what will occur in their lifetime (as it did!)
What hour?
The chapter concludes by re-emphasising the secret hour of Jesus' second coming and the need to be prepared for it. No one knows the day of Christ's return except the Father. The angels do not know. Even the Son does not know. It is the day of the end of time. That day no one can predict. If you ever read anywhere of it predicted then immediately you know the writer is wrong!
